Military Spending

Today, military spending accounts for more than half of the federal government's entire discretionary budget. Nuclear weapons spending alone accounts for over $40 billion annually, and is scheduled to increase.  There is an obvious connection between the bloated Pentagon budget and the critical budget shortfalls facing virtually every community in the country.

  • We call for serious cuts to military spending. We need those funds at home and we do not need a military that controls and polices the world.
  • We call for a redefinition of America’s proper role in the world towards one of protecting Americans instead of “full spectrum dominance,” a favorite Pentagon term. Such a change in our military mission would enable us to dramatically cut spending and use those saved resources in socially useful ways at home and elsewhere, enhancing both our national security and our economy.
